Orchitis caused by mumps can be treated through antiviral treatment, symptomatic treatment, bed rest, local cold compress, and prevention of complications. Mumps orchitis is usually caused by mumps virus infection and manifests as testicular swelling, pain, fever and other symptoms.
1. Antiviral treatment
Mumps orchitis is caused by viral infection. Antiviral drugs such as ribavirin granules, acyclovir tablets, and ganciclovir dispersible tablets can be used as directed by your doctor. These drugs can inhibit viral replication and reduce inflammatory responses. When using antiviral drugs, please note that adverse reactions such as dizziness and nausea may occur. People with abnormal liver function should use with caution.
2. Symptomatic treatment
When testicular pain is severe, you can use analgesic drugs such as ibuprofen sustained-release capsules, acetaminophen tablets, and diclofenac sodium sustained-release tablets. If the fever exceeds 38.5°C, physical cooling is required and antipyretic drugs should be used if necessary. Avoid drinking alcohol when using painkillers, and patients with gastric ulcers should use them under the guidance of a doctor.
3. Bed rest
In the acute stage, you should absolutely stay in bed, and use a scrotal support to elevate the scrotum to reduce swelling. Avoid strenuous exercise or standing for long periods of time to prevent aggravation of testicular congestion. Physical activity should also be limited during the recovery period, and bed rest is usually required for 1-2 weeks until symptoms are completely relieved.
4. Local cold compress
In the early stage of the disease, you can use an ice pack to apply cold compress to the affected testicle for 15-20 minutes each time, repeating at an interval of 1 hour. Cold compresses can reduce swelling and pain, but care should be taken to avoid frostbite to the skin. After 48 hours, it can be changed to hot compress to promote the absorption of inflammation, and the temperature should not be too high.
5. Prevent complications
It is necessary to closely observe changes in testicular size and texture, and conduct regular ultrasound examinations to rule out testicular abscesses. Pay attention to monitoring body temperature and semen quality, and be alert to long-term complications such as infertility. When combined with bacterial infection, antibiotics such as cefixime dispersible tablets and amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium tablets need to be added.
Patients with mumps orchitis should maintain a light diet and drink plenty of water to promote metabolism. During the recovery period, avoid spicy and irritating foods, quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption. Wear loose, breathable underwear to keep the perineum clean and dry. If you have persistent high fever, severe pain, or obvious hardening of your testicles, you need to seek medical attention immediately. After recovery, it is recommended to conduct routine semen examination to evaluate fertility function.
